Pac-12 Power Rankings – Week 2

Posted: September 7, 2011 in Power Rankings

The idea behind the “Power Rankings” is to rate the teams by their actual on-field resumes, as opposed to basing them around pre-season guesswork. Since we only have one week of games to judge them by so far, these rankings will not necessarily represent where I think these teams will end up at the end of the season.

1. #6 Stanford (1-0)
Last week: W 57-3 v. San Jose State
Next up: @ Duke
Prediction: Another perennial patsy gets pounded by the Cardinal.

2. #13 Oregon (0-1)
Last week: L 27-40 v. #2 LSU
Next up: v. Nevada
Prediction: The Ducks get back on track with a big win in Autzen.

3. Arizona State (1-0)
Last week: W 48-14 v. UC Davis
Next up: v. #21 Missouri
Prediction: The Devils’ dominate defensively and come out on top.

4. Arizona (1-0)
Last week: W 41-10 v. Northern Arizona
Next up: @ #9 Oklahoma State
Prediction: A 60-minute highlight reel ends in an upset win for the Cats.

5. Washington State (1-0)
Last week: W 64-21 v. Idaho State
Next up: v. UNLV
Prediction: The Cougs win big to remain the Pac-12’s highest scoring team.

6. Cal (1-0)
Last week: W 36-21 v. Fresno State
Next up: @ Colorado
Prediction: The Bears win a non-conference game over a conference opponent.

7. Utah (1-0)
Last week: W 27-10 v. Montana State
Next up: @ USC
Prediction: The Utes make a statement and become the first team to win a Pac-12 game.

8. USC (1-0)
Last week: W 19-17 v. Minnesota
Next up: v. Utah
Prediction: Another lackluster effort results in a close loss for the Trojans.

9. UCLA (0-1)
Last week: L 34-38 @ Houston
Next up: v. San Jose State
Prediction: The Bruins get a much needed win against a really bad team.

10. Colorado (0-1)
Last week: L 17-34 @ Hawaii
Next up: v. California
Prediction: The Buffs keep it respectable, but still end up on the losing end.

11. Washington (1-0)
Last week: W 30-27 v. Eastern Washington
Next up: v. Hawaii
Prediction: The Huskies find a way to win, but it isn’t pretty. Again.

12. Oregon State (0-1)
Last week: L 28-29 v. Sacramento State
Next up: @ #8 Wisconsin
Prediction: Things go from bad to worse for the Beavs.

I’ll have to see a Pac-12 team “upset” someone before I’ll believe it. Last week didn’t promote confidence – for me, at least.

Totally agree; the PAC’s lookin’ weak so far. I suppose, depending on your definition, you could say that most of the teams “upset” someone last week. As in, their fan bases. Even most of the wins were unimpressive. No wonder they’re trying to add more teams to the league.

Anyway, not sure how much I actually believe Arizona will pull it off, but I figured ya gotta pick an underdog every now and then. And OKST gave up 31 points to Louisiana-Monroe last week, which bodes well for ‘Zona, so we’ll see.

I guess technically, ASU and Utah are upset picks too. And I almost chose HAW over WASH, and COLO over CAL. But then I didn’t.

  2. quackmaster says:

Huh. Turns out my token upset pick wasn’t even close.

I would’ve been right to pick Stoops to act like a complete tool again though.

I’m starting to think maybe Oregon should be shopping other conferences…

  3. Mr. Oregon says:

Is it normal to give wins to teams with the lower scores, ya know, like in golf. I only ask because you have UCLA with at 1-0 when they lost.
